Mr Kaul, one of the pioneers of art house Indian cinema, had been unwell for some time. He died at home after being discharged from hospital.
He began his career in 1969, and went on to make a number of films, winning a national award for a documentary, Siddheshwari, in 1989.

"Mani will be remembered as one of the pioneers... of a parallel cinema movement in India. He was also a great teacher of Indian cinema," Mr Padgaonkar told the Press Trust of India news agency.
